The first weeks with a new kitten set behavioral patterns that last a lifetime. Early socialization, proper veterinary care, and appropriate handling during the critical window of 2 to 7 weeks shapes confidence, temperament, and tolerance for handling.
First Vet Visit Priorities
Schedule within the first week. The vet will check for feline herpesvirus, intestinal parasites, ear mites, and start the vaccine series. Core kitten vaccines: FVRCP at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. Rabies at 12 to 16 weeks. FeLV vaccine for cats with outdoor access.
- FVRCP: core kitten vaccine, given in series
- Rabies: required in most states
- FeLV: outdoor or multi-cat household cats
- Fecal test: roundworms nearly universal in kittens
- Ear mite check: very common in young cats
Essential Kitten Supplies
Litter box: one per cat plus one extra, unscented clumping litter to start. Kitten-appropriate food: AAFCO-approved growth formula, wet food preferred for hydration. Sisal scratching post: introduce before bad scratching habits form. Carrier: introduce positively from week one.

- AAFCO-approved kitten food: wet preferred for hydration
- Sisal scratching post: tall, stable, vertical
- Carrier with positive association: from week one
- Wand toys: establish hunt-play routine early
Socialization and Handling
Handle kittens frequently, gently touching paws, ears, mouth, and belly. Each handling session builds tolerance for grooming and veterinary procedures for life. Pair novel experiences with food for positive association.
Feral Background Kittens
Kittens raised in isolation from humans require patient, gradual desensitization over weeks to months. They can become social with their person but may never be comfortable with strangers. Realistic expectations help both cat and owner.
- Handle daily: paws, ears, mouth, belly
- Touch tolerance: lifetime dividend from kitten handling
- Exposure to different people: confidence building
- Pair new experiences with food: positive association
- Feral background: months of patient desensitization
