Potty training a puppy is straightforward in principle and exhausting in practice. The principle: prevent every accident, reward every success, and build a conditioned response that outdoor equals bathroom. The exhaustion comes from the consistency required — puppies need to go every 1–2 hours.

The Core Method

Take the puppy outside every 1–2 hours, after every meal, after every nap, and immediately after play. Use a consistent spot. Wait until they go, then mark with a word and reward immediately — within 2 seconds of finishing. No reward inside, no party on the way back. The reward must happen outside.

  • Out every 1–2 hours and after meals, naps, play
  • Consistent outdoor spot helps build routine
  • Mark and reward within 2 seconds of finishing
  • No reward inside or on the way back
  • If no success, supervise closely and try again in 15 min

Supervision and Confinement

When you can't supervise directly, confine the puppy to a crate or small gated area. Puppies shouldn't roam freely in the house until they've demonstrated consistent reliability — usually several weeks to a few months.

  • Crate when you can't supervise directly
  • Gated area: larger than crate but prevents roaming
  • No solo access to the house until fully reliable
  • Accident = immediate cleanup, no punishment
  • Enzymatic cleaner: removes scent that attracts return

Accidents and Setbacks

Never punish a puppy for an accident — especially after the fact. Dogs don't connect delayed punishment to past behavior. Rubbing their nose in it or scolding damages trust and teaches nothing. If you catch them in the act, say 'ah-ah' calmly, take them outside immediately, and reward when they finish there.

Enzymatic Cleaner Is Essential

Regular cleaners don't remove the odor markers that attract dogs to toilet in the same spot repeatedly. Enzymatic cleaners (Nature's Miracle, Rocco & Roxie) break down the compounds — they're non-negotiable for housebreaking success.

  • No punishment — especially after the fact
  • Catch-in-the-act: calmly interrupt and take outside
  • Enzymatic cleaner: removes odor attractant completely
  • Regression is normal — restart supervision protocol
  • Health check if sudden accidents in a trained dog

Housebreaking Essentials

Two products make the most difference in housebreaking success — one for cleanup, one for prevention.

Non-Negotiable
Nature's Miracle Enzyme Cleaner
Enzymatic cleaner that breaks down urine compounds at the molecular level — removing the odor markers that attract dogs to re-soil the same spot. Non-enzymatic cleaners leave markers that trigger repetition.
